Open Sourcing Work Created By K12 Public Entities

In 2012 the Washington State Legislature approved House Bill 2337 essentially allowing resources created by employees of a public school district within the state of Washington to release these works in an open manner to be shared with anyone.

Peninsula School District then followed up in 2013 with a new policy 5509 regarding ownership of work, and thus allowing the district at it's discretion to release work with an open source license. This board policy was vetted for months by legal council and is the basis for the work we are now doing.

We encourage any school district who is looking to go down this road to use our policy as a guide for creating your own internal policies and procedures.
